Important: This calculator is a guide to minimum ratios only. You must still consider staff qualifications, deployment, staff breaks, room layout, supervision, safeguarding, SEND needs and the current EYFS statutory framework.

How to use the Nursery Ratio Calculator

Just enter the total number of under 2s, 2-year-olds and 3 to 5-year-olds you have, then let the calculator work out the minimum staffing ratio.

If you have a member of staff who can work to a higher ratio because they hold an approved level 6 qualification, only include them if they are working directly with the 3 to 5-year-olds.

This calculator is designed for nurseries, pre-schools and childcare on domestic premises that operate in England.

Nursery Staff Ratios Used in This Calculator

1:3Under 2 year olds
1:52 year olds
1:83 to 5 year olds
1:133 to 5s with approved level 6 staff

Please always check the latest EYFS statutory framework and qualification requirements before making final staffing decisions.

Nursery Ratio Best Practice

Please note that this is a whole-setting calculator. In real nursery practice, you may still need more staff than the minimum number shown.

You need to think about how staff are deployed across rooms, how breaks are covered, whether staff have the right qualifications, whether children have additional needs, and whether supervision remains strong throughout the day.
